August Bitter was a resident of Chicago, Illinois when he mustered in as sergeant, Company ā€œG,ā€ 24th Illinois Regiment Infantry (First Hecker Jaeger Regiment) on July 8, 1861. Following the battle of Perryville, Kentucky, Bitter was promoted 2nd lieutenant November 1862, and in May 1864, he was promoted 1st lieutenant. Bitter mustered out with the regiment at Chicago August 6, 1864. When Metzner received this photograph, Bitter was likely a 2nd Lieutenant.
