Lieutenant Charles Reifert, 32nd Indiana

Charles Reifert came from Huntington, Indiana, to Indianapolis in August 1861, to join Erdelmeyer’s Turners of Company “A.” The 23-year old was enrolled as corporal by Captain Erdelmeyer and mustered in by Lieutenant Colonel Thomas J. Wood. Following the battle of Stones River he received appointment as 2nd Lieutenant of Company “K.” The Adjutant General’s Reports shows Reifert was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Company “F” in early November 1863, but he led Company “K” into the Confederate rifle pits at the foot of Missionary Ridge on November 25. Lieutenant Reifert returned to Indianapolis and mustered out in September 1864.
