Unidentified Union Officer, 32nd Indiana
By Michael A. Peake

This half-length portrait of a seated officer, facing front is possibly "field-grade" (i.e., major or above) but he is wearing a private-purchase sack coat. The hat clearly has the numbers "32" pinned on the front, and it appears to be decorated with a cloth 4th Army Corps "triangle" badge sewn on the side. The 4th Corps "triangle" was not officially adopted until March 26, 1864, just after the 32nd was assigned to the 3rd Division, 4th Army Corps.
