Lieutenant Carl Wappenhaus, U.S.N.
By Michael A. Peake

The presence of Ensign Carl F. R. Wappenhaus in the Metzner Collection is a bit of a mystery. He received appointment as Mate on the U. S. S. Augusta December 22, 1862, and less than three weeks later, he was promoted to acting ensign. Wappenhaus was assigned to the Instruction Ship Savannah, at the New York Navy-yard January 15, 1863, and that March, he received orders to report for duty on the U. S. S. Ticonderoga. He served as acting master from May 1865 until honorably discharged September 29,1868.

German inscription on reverse reads “Carl Wappenhaus, Lieutenant of United States Marines,” with a handwritten date “on the 4th December 1863.” Portrait by Photographer Julius Brill, 204 Chatham Square, New York.
